During an RREC meeting last weekend we visited the very interesting automobile museum in Melle, near Osnabrück, Northern Germany. This museum has an interesting concept. It's a rolling exhibition. All cars there are privately owned by numerous enthusiasts, drivable and are being driven as the cars are only allowed to stay for a certain period of time.
Among the cars there currently is this rare 6½ Litre Bentley BR2353 in drivable condition. Rare and particularly interesting because it still carries the original Freestone & Webb Weymann saloon body. Rare also because the only photos around are from 1996. |
As I said, this 3-story museum is very interesting and probably unique worldwide as it is not a collection. It is run by a number of enthusiasts, and many people have their classics exhibited there. The exhibition is constantly rotated as all cars are drivable. There are some very rare cars, very old ones from around 1900 too, but this 6½ Litre is the only Bentley, though an also very rare 4½ Litre Derby Bentley Mulliner DHC was just being serviced in the top classic car garage "Veteranenhof" to the rear of the museum.
We had the RREC German Section spring meet in Melle this year and this museum was part of it. Particularly interesting also because on last weekend there was the world's largest Steamcar Rallye base in the courtyard of the museum, with a number of
Stanley and White cars coming over from the UK for the event presenting a fantastic sight. |
