Of old Bentley Friendships
Paul Gibbs Pancheri - Alan Giles - Robert McLellan

Robert McLellan - April 2016 newsletter:
"I used to correspond with Gibbs Pancheri in the 1980s and 1990s, an old-timer in the BDC and club officer going back to the 1930s. I met him at a BDC event in England and he got a kick out of educating this Texan who had so much interest in Vintage Bentleys..."

Gibbs Pancheri

"I was so pleased to hear of your meeting and relationship with Paul Gibbs Pancheri who was a great friend of mine. I first met him when I arrived in Malaya, complete with Bentley 707 as a young novice. He was the shipping manager of Harper Gilfillan and arranged the unloading and clearance of the Bentley. He was of course older than myself and knew the ropes. We became firm friends due to our mutual interest. I soon joined the Malaysian and Singapore Vintage Car Register and we met frequently whilst I was working in Kuala Lumpur. Those happy Malayan days!

After Paul retired back to the UK, I visited him when he was with the BDC and later when he ran a post office."

"Yes, Gibbs was a great guy and I enjoyed our correspondence. His knowledge and devotion to Vintage Bentleys was very much admired and appreciated by me. We really hit it off."

"Further to our exchange of emails regarding my old friend Paul Gibbs Pancheri, attached are photos of an 'A' type gear box which I obtained from Paul in the 1970s after he had retired from Malaya and was running a post office. I think he had this spare gearbox with him in Malaya and brought it back with him to the U.K with his Bentley. I remember him telling me that he had also a spare chassis which he unfortunately had left in the Harper Gilfillan Pte. Ltd. (shipping agents / the company he worked for) warehouse in Singapore in the early years after the War. In those days he did not consider it worth bothering about!

I digress, the interesting point is that this gear box is clearly stamped AP 302 which may indicate that it was originally fitted to 3 litre ch.no. AP 302 Eng. No. 1246.

It's a pure guess but I know Paul had a close relationship with Syd Lawrence in the post-war period so he may have sourced the gearbox and chassis from him."
