Frank Sowden and PPB10, YF5006, 8 litre Bentley

I met W. O. Bentley on a couple of occasions, once at Outlon Park, then again at a BDC Scottish Whit weekend. He was a very quiet and humble man. When I look back now and think about the times I had in the 8 Litre, it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Thinking that there were only 100 8 litres made and that I had the great privilege of driving and racing this Bentley. I will never forget these times. The first time I drove the 8 litre was on the way to work. We would turn off the main road then drive up a long hill into Sandy Lane, where the mill was. This small minor road was about two and a half miles long , with an uphill slope, and a cross roads about three quarters of the way up, then you quickly went into a 30 mile an hour zone.

Frank would sometimes test the 8 litre out, for if he was doing 100 miles an hour by the time he hit the cross roads, he reckoned the car was going well. On a few runs we were doing more than 30 miles an hour when we hit the 30 mile an hour zone! This particular day Frank stopped the car, got out and I slid across to the driver’s seat. We went 12.5 feet for that was the distance we would travel before the car wanted to be in second gear. But I couldn’t select it! After a short while I got used to the F type gear box. The 8 litre was a dream to drive, once up to around 20 miles per hour the steering became very light, it was just parking that need all your strength.
