Frank and I also raced at Oulton Park. I remember racing there and dropping a valve. So at the end of the day, all we did was take the plugs out of that cylinder, and drove home at a steady speed. I can only remember a couple of times when we couldn’t make it home. One time I lost the plug out of the water pump, fortunately I noticed it as I pulled off the motorway, so pulled into a garage and topped the radiator up, and drove on for a while. But the Bentley was overheating so had to call for help. We were towed home, only about 5 miles mind you, so nearly made it home!
One year in the mid 1960‘s Frank won almost every trophy the BDC gave out that year. It was a very proud moment for Frank. That year he was asked to take the 8 litre to the Dorchester hotel in London, for the BDC annual dinner. So not only did Frank race at many circuits around UK, drive to many Bentley weekends, he also drove the 8 litre into and across the dining room floor at the Dorchester hotel in London. Frank was chairman of the North East region, of the Bentley Drivers Club, for a few years. I remember one BDC Whit weekend that we went to, Frank arrived on the Friday evening, and parked the 8 litre out the front of the hotel. That evening he sought out Margaret McCosh, Kay McCosh’s wife and told her that the 8 litre was parked out the front of the hotel, and it was hers for the weekend. Margaret loved driving the 8 litre. Frank was very generous with his Bentley. Kay McCosh owned YF15, a very fast 4½ litre, but Margaret knew the 8 litre was quicker. |
