When my Bentley caught fire
What should I have done?
By Peter Graham, March 2016

On 7 October 2002 while driving my Bentley across Australia, it caught fire. With dire consequences. The insurance company paid out on the claim.

I had several options:
1. Scrap the car and use the insurance money to buy another car.
2. Give the car to a commercial rebuilder and sit back and pay the bills hoping the payout was sufficient and not know for certain what was happening.
3. Be brave, employ a skilled engineer and fit out a workshop and rebuild it at home. So I could be certain of what was done, using the best advice from members of the BDC.

I took option 3. I would love to know if you readers think I made the right decision. What should I have done? What would you have done?

It took just over two years of full-time effort by two people. We never considered cost, just what was the best solution to the masses of issues that cropped up.

The car has now done 176,000 km since being back on the road and is still providing good service.

your opinion on what you think Peter Graham should have done. Do you agree with his decision?
