The Seventh Biennial Symposium on Connoisseur and the Collector Car was recently held in Naples, Florida with Miles Collier presiding. The following excerpts from the conference dwelled on restoration and concerns regarding the preservation of important vintage sports and racing cars. If you find this of interest, a link below will take you to the complete article 'Preserve, Protect & Defend' by Preston Lerner that appears in the July 2013 issue of Automobile. To set the stage for their concerns, watch this video.

Michael Shanks, a Stanford archeologist suggests that the impulse to race a fragile — and irreplaceable — car is essentially selfish. "So it's a matter of your arrogance and ego that you want that experience for yourself."

Nick Mason, a formidable vintage-car racer and collector, responds, "This is not a symposium at all. It's a rehab event. My name is Nick, and I'm a recovering historic racer." The auditorium erupts into laughter. Then Mason adds: "It's important to understand that [vintage racing] used to be cheap racing. You could take two Bentleys — a three-liter and a four-and-a-half liter, and you'd put the four-and-a-half in the three-liter and think you were very clever." The audience responds with knowing groans. Here at the symposium, the unnecessary modification of a valuable artifact is seen as a crime tantamount to slapping aluminum siding on a Frank Lloyd Wright house or cutting a majestic Matisse canvas down in size to fit over a fireplace.

Charlie Nearburg, whose collection ranges from prewar Millers to Cosworth DFV-era Formula 1 cars, states, "Value is the biggest detriment to the appreciation of a car, because it attracts the wrong interest and it discourages its use. Everybody here is a serious student of cars in all of their aspects — performance, design, engineering, and, to a lesser extent, collectibility. There's an intellectual curiosity here that reflects Miles' spirit."

"Stewardship is a responsibility," major-league collector Bruce McCaw says after the lecture. "It's easy to say, 'This car looks tatty. Let's put a new paint job on it.' But you have to understand what you have. Some cars need to stay as they are. For them, preserving originality and history comes before everything else."

Lee Clark, assistant manager of the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, had objected to the notion that it was irresponsible to risk historic racing cars on the track. "I'd just like to point out that, if it weren't for vintage racing, most of these cars wouldn't be here," he said. "What good is preserving them if we can't enjoy them? I'm a gearhead. I want to hear them running. I'm just worried that everything's going to be put in a display case."

I would like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their contributions in June 2013:

Anthony Barrett, Bob Rippon, Brian Rivett, Dave Wilkes, David A. Smethurst (Rev), Ernest Van Arendonk, Greg Porter, Iain Steele, John Skidmore, Revb'd Fr Herbert John Pitchford, Ken Greenfield, Lawrence Southward, Max Barraclough, Nigel Catterall, Paul Marsh, Russell Browne, Steven borg, Stuart Sheffield, Thomas Mark & Wayne McLaren

Mystery about the 'Blue Train Bentley'
Which vintage Bentley is the original Blue Train Bentley — Chassis No. BA2592 or HM2855?

Contribution from our reader Wayne McLaren: "Chassis no. HM2855 is frequently referred to as the Blue Train Bentley. This is incorrect notwithstanding it being seen in most paintings inspired by the 'event'. I accompanied a friend on a visit to Mortimer, an auto book dealer in England in 1982. We asked him why he had sold HM2855 — ostensibly the Blue Train Bentley — which he had bought from a dealer (at that time, in deplorable condition). He said when he researched the car prior to restoring it, he found that it was built after the race, so it could not have been HM2855 car in the race. He therefore sold it before restoring it. The real Blue Train Bentley is BA2592."

We would love to hear from our readers on this. Write to Robert.

Article from 1929
British Victory at Le Mans

Published in "The Motor", June 18, 1929

Beautiful workmanship, magnificent driving and, above all, the most minute preparation enabled the Bentley team to pull off the double victory. For this year, not content with covering the biggest distance in the 4 hours, a Bentley also won the final of the race on a cylinder-capacity handicap basis. Moreover, on the score of distance, three other Bentleys were respectively second, third and fourth, and they finished together, crossing the finishing line like a squadron of battleships in "line-ahead."
