Do you know the full history of your Vintage Bentley? If you do, you are in the minority.

Now that you know about our website, the information available to you will only grow. Hopefully you are also a member of the Bentley Drivers Club. Make sure that you contact the BDC and receive copies of the records of your chassis. It is a free service that the club provides its members for their specific car. This should include the factory chassis delivery information, coachbuilder information, Service Depot records and BDC membership records. Scan this information and e-mail it to us to add to your chassis web page.

You can also contact the previous owners listed in the membership records for older photos and information from the period of their ownership. You will be surprised how enthusiastically former owners and enthusiasts will share pictures and information, along with delightful anecdotes, adding character and charisma to your car's history.

I would like to thank all you Bentley folks who contributed photographs and information this month:

Carolyne Haynes, Clive Broughton, Dave Morley, David Bird, David Reich, David taylor, Donald Wright, Edward Stone, Gary Mcmillan, Gerry Robinson, Jean-Marie Guivarc'h, John Victor Cooper, Julian Grimwade, Lionel Burrell, Paul Kennady, Peter Lovett, Peter Roberts, Peter Wilson, Philippe De Smet, Reuben Frankau, Rick Ford, Rupert Lloyd Thomas, Stephen Barry, Thorsten Overgaard, Tom Heckman, Tony Johns. (A few of the contributions are queued up and will be published in the next few days.)

Vintage Bentley cars in showbiz

There are many movies all about cars, with a small amount of plot, others featuring long dramatic car chases, but there are also many movies and TV shows where the choice of car helps to define the character of the hero or villain, highlight the fashions of the time the film was made or even transform and otherwise ordinary film into an iconic one... We have put together a list of Vintage Bentley cars that have been in showbiz...

British Heritage
By Donald Wright

This rebuild story of the Wright family's 1929 Chassis no. UK3285 was received from Donald Wright in March 2009. (Unfortunately, we had misplaced a batch of e-mails around that time due to a server upgrade. Some of them reappeared from our backups recently, and we we are delighted to be able to present this story to you, though, some three years after the event...)

Donald Wright's story begins like this: "Loss of oil pressure must surely rank among the most heart-stopping feelings of any vintage car owner, especially the vintage Bentley... The Wright family's 1929 'WO' suffered just that whilst motoring to a 'boys' winter lunch..."

Also read his "Ode to a Vintage Bentley".

Full Bore: Bentley 4½ Supercharged

Published in "Classic Car" - February 1974

A Vintage Bentley is a pretty impressive car to look at and to sit in; a Blower 4½ is even more so. Having absorbed the large steering wheel close to the chest, the mass of instruments and drip-feeds on the dashboard, you look up the road — hopefully a dusty ribbon vanishing into the distance like the Mulsanne straight back in 1930; at the end of the long louvred bonnet you see the rounded shoulders of a polished radiator with a vast quick-action filler cap silhouetted on top.

Bentley Girls
Poem by John Boothman

My head is turned by Bentley girls,
I readily admit;
With blonde hair, brown hair, straight or curls:
I couldn't care a bit.
Fair-skinned or freckled, short or tall,
In cloche hats, caps or boaters -
Such features matter not at all
If they drive Bentley motors.

Some Bentley girls wear duffel coats
While others' coats are leather;
Some like to mess about in boats
Regardless of the weather.
No matter where they choose to go
Or what they choose to do,
When travelling by road, they know
The Bentley must come too.

The Bentley girl's a jolly sort -
Indeed, her sense of humour
Is equalled by her love of sport
(That's fact and not just rumour).
Her silent gear-changes show
A feminine dexterity;
Her pretty face is all aglow
With mischief and sincerity.

If only there were Bentley girls
For every Bentley boy!
Festooned with goggles, gloves and pearls,
The better to enjoy
The pleasures of the open road
And of the tonneau cover:
For inside every Bentley toad
There lurks a princely lover.

We'd gladly strip their Bentley kit
From goggles down to pants,
And so facilitate a bit
Of vintage car romance.

But sadly, it's just fantasy
("How true!" I hear them cry),
For Bentley girls are scarce, you see:
Demand exceeds supply.

So if you are a Bentley girl
The world's your very own;
And you may wonder, as you hurl
Your car round Silverstone,
Why all those chaps with eyes on stalks
Applaud your every antic?
The answer's simple: passion talks -
And Bentley boys are frantic.

Does anyone know of Reg. no. NL 6950?
"I wonder if the attached three-Litre might be of interest to you and whether you could tell us anything about it. These snaps, taken in Swaledale (Yorkshire) are from my grandmother's family album from 1934, and I believe the car was registered in Northumberland in Spring 1924." — Reuben Frankau

Instruction Books - The starting point
3 Litre :: 6½ Litre :: 8 Litre :: 4 Litre

It is surprising how many owners do not possess the 'Instruction Book' for their vintage Bentleys. When it comes to restoration, the little Instruction Books are a good place to begin... You will find one for each model here (except the 4½, unfortunately).

If you want a copy to keep, just request us for a convenient PDF download.
