Since most fellow Vintage Bentley owners have either restored their cars or keep at maintaining them, they have the knowledge and experience that other owners would greatly appreciate learning from. But if we do not share this information with each other, we become dependent on commercial 'experts' for the upkeep of our Bentleys.

Vintage Bentleys have become investments and high-point concours cars, so it is seen as good sense to "leave it to the professionals". But that is not the philosophy of the Bentley Drivers Club, and nor is it ours. And surely that wasn't W.O.'s original purpose... A Vintage Bentley connects with its owner at a primal level. Only a hands-on owner can reciprocate that bond and truly enjoy the car.

There are those among us who want to run the cars on tours and in vintage racing. An intimate knowledge of our cars is important to prevent breakdown on the road and track, and more importantly, knowing what to do it when there is a breakdown. Onboard tools and a manual can get you back on the road, while a cell phone will only hail a tow truck. Besides, doing your own work gives you satisfaction, pride and a sense of accomplishment that most Vintage Bentley owners appreciate.

The restoration section of this web site is available for your contributions of information gained from your knowledge and experience, and there is the Bentley Clinic for your questions. Load it up and we all will profit from its contents. Remember, as the BDC points out, the "D" is for Drivers as opposed to "owners".

I would like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their contributions this month:

Adrain Cook, Anthony Gonner, Bruce Campbell, Carter Johnson, Cindy Rio, Claire Makin, David Bird, Gary McMillan, Henry Davies, Ian McLeod, John Summers, John Vallings, John Victor Cooper, Julian Grimwade, Lars Hedborg, Mark Regan, Peter Graham, Priscilla Cullen, Dr. Rainer Herbst, Robert M. Thomas, Roley Fraser, Russell Browne, Sally Beyer, Simon Aldred, W. Whitman Ball, Weibel Franco (A few of the contributions are queued up and will be published in the next few days.)

Celebrating W.O.'s Masterpieces
By Mark J. McCourt, Hemmings Motor News, Oct 2012

"Bentleys are a unique breed among classic automobiles, because you're just as, if not more, likely to see an 85-year-old Bentley being driven hard on a tour or raced on a track as you are to see one on a manicured concours lawn. And Bentley owners love to learn about their cars' individual histories and to share information with one another. There are Bentley clubs around the world that celebrate the cars, draw together owners and are storehouses for information, but the acknowledged online home of that enthusiasm is VintageBentleys.org."

Maharajah of Jaipur's Speed Six coupe, chassis LR2778...

Chassis LR2778 was delivered to its first owner, the Maharaja of Jaipur 82 years ago, in October 1930. It was re-imported to England in 1937 when it was purchased by Frederick George Lucas Becker. Becker's eldest son Thomas John Frederick Becker recently added a significant amount of information on the car for the 38 years it was in the family's loving care.

Article from 1942
At "Bentleys"

Published in "The Autocar', January 16, 1942

Recollections of Life as a "Hand" With the Old Company — the Height of Youthful Ambition Attained by an Enthusiast — "Upon leaving school I entered the works of Bentley Motors, Ltd., at Cricklewood — but that bare statement of the beginning of a career in the motor trade hardly does justice to my feelings at the time. The very name Bentley meant more to me than any other name in the world; for years I had followed the fortunes of the marque and had studied the specifications of the cars (when I should have studied other and duller subjects!), and my enthusiasm was such that I was even known to my schoolfellows by the nickname of "Bentley"."

Chassis no. PM3268: Bentley 4½ litre, chassis PM3268, was built as a 1928 Model specification chassis. It was fitted with engine PM3261, probably with SU HVG5 and ML ER4 magnetos. Transmission was by cone clutch. More

Chassis no. BL1607: My father was the owner of this vehicle from approximately 1961 - 1968. It was a light blue colour at that time. It was used as the family car and was my father's passion. He took it all around France and Spain on family holidays and it was in France that it came to grief. More

Chassis no. MR3400: I purchased this vehicle in England in 2007 and brought it back to the U.S. So it has been in the U.S. since 2007, not 2006. I should also mention that the coachwork on the car is from a 1928 4½ Litre. More

Instruction Books - The starting point
3 Litre :: 6½ Litre :: 4½ Litre :: 8 Litre :: 4 Litre

It is surprising how many owners do not possess the 'Instruction Book' for their vintage Bentleys. When it comes to restoration, the little Instruction Books are a good place to begin... You will find one for each model here.

If you want a copy to keep, just request us for a convenient PDF download.

Many thanks to Adrian Cook and Dr. Rainer Herbst for making the 4 1/2 litre vintage Bentley Instruction Book available.
