Each week we receive several e-mails encouraging us to also host a Facebook page for VintageBentleys.org. Especially since it appears that nearly everyone has a Facebook (FB) account these days, to track their interests and stay connected with others. A definite advantage of going on FB would be that our frequent website updates would percolate quickly to our friends on the network. (Please take a moment and let me know what you think. E-mail me: Robert@VintageBentleys.org)

While this certainly means more work for our small team here, the effort would be worthwhile if you all pressed on with the photo submissions, documentation and information. We urge our readers to send in additional anecdotal accounts surrounding these cars... For example: Michael Bell whose grandfather once owned chassis XF3517 has shared the most interesting tidbits about this car occurring from 1936 to the 1970s...

I would also like to thank the following vintage Bentley enthusiasts for their contributions in October 2012:

Agustin Andresen, Caroline Comer-Stone, Clyde Thorley, David Bird, David John Kinney, Dennis Lingane, Duncan Macnab, Edward LaBounty, Edward Stone, Ernest van Arendonk, Federico Alvarez Castillo, Hans Hugenholtz, John Morris, John Pitchford, Malcolm Tearle, Michael Bell, Michael Holden, Neville Thorley, Nigel MacDonald, Patrick Sonnerat, Peter Blasio, Philippe De Smet, Victor Gibbons (A few of the contributions are queued up and will be published in the next few days.)

Ethanol-laced (E-10) Fuel
By John Peirson - RROC, British Columbia Region

Ethanol-laced fuel was not sold when our cars were built. It rots the metal and gaskets in carburetors, and should not be used in any Bentley. An RREC Bulletin advises against the use of ethanol-laced fuel. According to a club member, "ethanol (alcohol) is a solvent and by itself can do harm to gaskets and sealant products as used in older engines." Ethanol-laced fuel is also hard on our engines because it causes them to run hotter, with even lower fuel efficiency than is now the case - and that is saying something.

Vintage Bentley models by Bentley Motors
Whether you're an owner, enthusiast or are looking for a special gift, these vintage Bentley models are a great option. "Approved by Bentley's design team and made to uncompromising standards of craftsmanship." — Bentley Motors

1-43 Speed Six Blue Train

This Speed Six fixed head coupé was built in 1930 by the coachbuilders Gurney Nutting for Captain Woolf Barnato, then-Chairman of Bentley Motors. It became known as the ‘Blue Train’ car after Barnato’s race to beat the famous Blue Train back to Calais. As with all our models we check all the details against the real car – down to the exact number of rivets on the bonnet and the tiny Bentley Drivers Club mascot fitted to the front. [More]

1-12 Tin Plate Blower

The Bentley ‘Blower’, a supercharged 4½ litre, was commissioned by Tim Birkin in his quest for more power and speed. As well as five special Team cars, one of which was the template for this model, a further batch of fifty cars were built at Birkin’s Welwyn Factory. This is an impression of the car in 1/12th scale and is not an exact replica. [More]

Article from 1927
The Le Mans 24-hour Race

Published in "The Motor", June 21, 1927

The 24-hour race for the Rudge-WhitWorth Cup took place at Le Mans in the Department of the Sarthe, France. It began at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 18th, and finished at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 19th. The cars, which were of touring type, were required to average certain performances according to their engine capacity, the vehicle having covered the greatest excess mileage being acclaimed the winner. The distance round the course was 10.7 miles. The first 20 circuits had to be made with the hoods erected, and only the electric starter was allowed to be used for starting the engines.

Chassis no. 990: "ST990 has engine 953. ST990 lost her 1005 engine in the 1940s. The story I was told when I bought the 990 project was that an owner had both this blue label tourer and a red label car in the 1940s. He put a conrod through the sump of his red label. So he swapped the damaged crankcase from the red label with the engine from the blue label. The crankcase, of course, carries the engine number." More

Chassis no. XF3517: "My father, Robert Malcolm Bell, owned this car from 1936 to 1948. His brother-in-law George Hugh Barclay Dodd acquired the car on his behalf from Jack Barclay following my grandfather George Morton Dodd trading it in in part exchange for a Lagonda Rapide which is now owned by GHB Dodd who is now 98..." Chassis no. TX3239: "The car I bought in 2010 and was fully restored in Argentina. All the beauty, body and paint was done by Jorge Sica. The engine was made by Jorge Anadón, who owns Pursang. And the tapestry was made by Andreozzi. For me, the three best craftsmen out there at the moment in the country." More

Instruction Books - The starting point
3 Litre :: 6½ Litre :: 4½ Litre :: 8 Litre :: 4 Litre

It is surprising how many owners do not possess the 'Instruction Book' for their vintage Bentleys. When it comes to restoration, the little Instruction Books are a good place to begin... You will find one for each model here.
