Chassis number or registration number? Spotting the registration number plate is a quick way of identifying a Vintage Bentley, but is it always accurate? Usually the answer is yes, but a surprising number of times it is not.

Going to our search page and typing in the registration number, may reveal some surprises like multiple registration numbers or "your query has returned no results". There are numerous reasons for not finding a match and usually the reason will be revealed on the chassis page. The importance of establishing the correct chassis number and using it for identification, particularly in correspondence, cannot be over emphasized.

This can sometimes lead to a lot of humorous confusion such as the Bentley dealer with several Vintage Bentleys but only one registration plate. He would put that plate on whichever car he was currently selling. Occasionally, you just have to open the bonnet and read the chassis number to determine what you are looking at. Now you know why we list the cars by chassis number and not registration plate number.

I would like to thank all you Bentley folks who made this month a great success with your contributions:

Andreas Nagel, Anthony Barrett, Bruce Washington, Carolyne Haynes, Chris Williams, David Abbott, David Bird, Dhondt Bert, Ed Gehringer, Edward LaBounty, Edward Stone, Helmut Karbe, Henrik Schou-Nielsen, Jane Bealby, Janet Ganderton, Jean-Pierre Mueller, John Rowley, Julian West Dr., Kurt Furger, Malcolm Tearle, Mary P. H. Burgoyne, Patricia Imrie, Paul Cooper, Paul Walker, Robert Beckett, Stuart Forsey, Syd Reinhardt, Tim Summers, Tom Heckman, Vicky Roberts. (A few of the contributions are queued up and will be published in the next few days.)

Racing a 4½ litre Bentley Blower at the Le Mans Classic (in partnership with owner Martin Overington) Bell was supported by a 3-man pit crew..."

What you need to know about 15% ethanol gasoline
By David Hurth

"Not very long ago the EPA okayed 15% ethanol in gasoline. They originally okayed it in 2010, but a class action lawsuit delayed this. Unfortunately, they ultimately have been able to get it okayed. It is debatable if adding ethanol in gasoline does more good than harm to both the environment and to your car. Because of the harm that this gas can do to your car, I decided to look into what can be done to avoid it and why it is so bad for some cars.

A Record Breaker on the Road

Published in "The Motor", October 30, 1940

Just about two years ago I had a motoring experience, which really merited that oft-misused word "unforgettable." I joined Forrest Lycett for a Brooklands test of his 8-litre Bentley, a car known, I suppose, to every enthusiast who is familiar with English speed trials and hill-climbs. During the course of the afternoon, times were recorded which had never been equalled by any other car which The Motor has road-tested...

Instruction Books - The starting point
3 Litre :: 6½ Litre :: 8 Litre :: 4 Litre

It is surprising how many owners do not possess the 'Instruction Book' for their vintage Bentleys. When it comes to restoration, the little Instruction Books are a good place to begin... You will find one for each model here (except the 4½, unfortunately).

If you want a copy to keep, just request us for a convenient PDF download.
