Vintage Bentley owners and enthusiasts all over the world are part of a family that wants to stay together. And VintageBentleys.org has become their common gateway for information on 'what's up' in the vintage Bentley world (some start their day with a visit to the website!). Our readers revel in being a part of this great living history — the number of e-mails we receive everyday from this community bears testimony to the passion vintage Bentley cars command even today.

This Update Newsletter is a result of the continuous stream of subscription sign-ups we receive. Admittedly this initiative had been relegated to the back-burner for over two years, but clearly our readers were getting impatient...

This is the first edition in a series that will deliver all things Vintage-Bentley to your mailbox every month. We hope you enjoy this issue.

The Great India Rally 2009
Prince Michael
of Kent in India

Benjafield’s Racing Club spent four years in the concerted planning of 'The Great India Rally 2009' — Jan 13-24, 2009. Seven vintage Bentleys took part in the rally (or was it eight?), spanning nearly the entire range of vintage Bentley models — 3 Speed Sixes, two 4½ litres, one 3 litre (the oldest car in the rally) and one 8 litre model. In addition to 17 Benjafield’s Racing Club members and their friends and family, the Club had Prince Michael of Kent as their Patron and fellow Rally driver.

The Club wanted its participating members to experience a country "unparalleled in sensory and visual experience". Indeed the promise was well kept — the route was carefully chosen... each day was exhilaratingly different... each part a new unexpected obstacle... The Rally was flagged off in New Delhi on Jan 13, 2009 and ended in Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) on Jan 24, 2009. It passed through Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Ahmedabad weaving in and out of a series of adventures.

A Master Coachbuilder's Story

James (Jim) Pearce is an artist. Before he ever became involved with coachbuilding he had been a stone engraver — several architectural works in and around London bear his mark. Later he worked as a flight mechanic on Spitfires and Lancasters for the RAF. The sum total is a man with a fine head for precision engineering and the hands of a deft and sensitive artist... Jim's association with vintage Bentleys began in 1956. And when he married one year later he decided that he must own one. The coachbuilding business wove itself into his life most naturally in the following years. Here is the story up to year 1994.    Read article here.

David & James Pearce

"James E. Pearce" is a family owned-and-run coachbuilding business which was started in London in the late 1950s by Jim Pearce. The business expanded over the years as its reputation for knowledge and quality of work spread... Today, with a world-wide customer base, there are regular car imports for renovation/conservation from the U.S.A. and Europe. Restoration work undertaken by the company has won awards at major Concours D'elegances in the Bentley 3, 4 1/2, 6 1/2 and 8 litre classes.

David Pearce, having worked closely with his father Jim in the business for over thirty years, took over the ownership and running of the company in February 2000. This has allowed Jim to retire, although he continues to provide valued consultancy. Know more

Instruction Books - The starting point
3 Litre :: 6½ Litre :: 8 Litre :: 4 Litre

It is surprising how many owners do not possess the 'Instruction Book' for their vintage Bentleys. When it comes to restoration, the little Instruction Books are a good place to begin... You will find one for each model here (except the 4½, unfortunately).

If you want a copy to keep, just request us for a convenient PDF download.

Chassis no 458: The Jumbo Goddard Big Beast

This car has often evoked shock and awe. Says Stanley Mann, "It is very difficult to explain earth shattering performance... a phenomenal piece of kit and unbelievably fast; at really high speeds the front sort of takes off... around 550 bhp with enough torque to make you feel your head's coming off under acceleration." Mrs. Jumbo Goddard had suffered this first-hand, and her threat —"If you drive that thing again, I’m going to divorce you” — was probably not an empty one.

This 3/8-litre beast is something else. Here is Andrew English's first-person report of the experience. (Oct 2008)

They met when Bryan was 19 and Roberta 17. They built (with their hands) their first house together in the 1960s when Bryan was 25 & Roberta 23 — and they won a DIY competition. They bought their first vintage Bentley — a near derelict 1923 3 litre, in 1977. A complete re-build was carried out in their own home workshop. They bought their second Bentley in 1980 — a 1930 4½ litre that they own even today. They built (again with their own hands) their second house when Bryan was aged 59 years and Roberta 57 — "just past the first flush of youth". Among the countless creative things the Downes do, they also run wine tours as a hobby for friends and wine-loving Vintage Bentley enthusiasts who enjoy driving their cars...

We were delighted to hear that Robert and Mona are planning to add to their impressive range of vintage Bentley news and information with this monthly Newsletter. They provide a wonderful resource and do a great job for the vintage Bentley enthusiast... I was very pleased and surprised to see that they had several old photos of my 3-litre that I hadn't seen before!

We wish them every success.

Return to the Bump, Gil Cohen (2005)

1940: Flight Lieutenant Pete Brothers is greeted by his bull terrier "Merlin" on returning to RAF Biggin Hill. He is being questioned by the intelligence officer about the intense air battle that has just taken place high over Southern England. Pete's Bentley sits at dispersal with a sign on the windscreen — 'Air Defence Priority' — which Wing Commander Crossley Officer Commanding 32 Squadron had all the pilots display on their cars so they would not be held up in road blocks that surrounded RAF Biggin Hill at the time... [See recent photo of Air Commodore Peter Bothers signing prints of this art.]

Excerpt from "First hand Accounts from 24 Battle of Britain Pilots"
Source: The Battle of Britain Historical Society Discussion Forum

"When Luftwaffe bombers attacked North Weald airfield on a summer's day at the height of the Battle of Britain, Peter Brothers was concerned about one thing — his Bentley (chassis #134)... The Hurricane pilot stationed in Kent, then aged 22, said: "I was hopping mad. It was a beautiful Bentley Red Label. One of the bombs threw up a huge pile of earth which filled the car. It took me days to dig it out. It made me all the keener to get in the air and shoot them down."

Former vintage Bentley chassis 134 owner & WWII hero, Air Commodore Peter Bothers died on 18 Dec 2008, at 91 years. Obituary.

Limited edition prints of 'Return to the Bump' are available here.     ::     Artist - Gil Cohen
