1928 Bentley Two Passenger Sports — 4½ Litre
The 4½ litre Bentley needs no introduction to automobile enthusiasts. Their triumphs at Le Mans in 1924, '27, '28, '29 and 1930 helped bring the marque to the minds of sportsmen who wanted a car of dependable quality. This car had a very complete mechanical overhaul. It has the four cylinder, sixteen valve single overhead camshaft 4½ litre motor but the carburetors are not original and ignition was converted from magneto to coil. The mechanical brakes were changed to hydraulic and Koni shocks were added in replacement of the original friction type. Front axle, exhaust system and spring shackles were all fitted with new parts to make the overhaul complete. The electrical system throughout the car was completely rewired and the dynamo overhauled. The six wire wheels (two sidemounted spares) are either replacements or have been cut down to take larger tires. Body may be special or may have been reworked. Modifications reflect the English attitude toward the mechanical improvement of vintage motor cars for practical road use.

1958-1960

"My father, then flight Lieutenant Donald Donaldson-Davidson, owned this car from 1958 to 1960. He was also driving an Allard J2X Competition. He rebuilt DLK 9's engine shortly after buying with very few tools and a garage door hoist-home built. He was in the RAF (Navigator/Radar 1941-1973) flying night fighters from RAF Church Fenton in Yorkshire. He bought it for £300, I think through a trade contact called Ayrton Motors of Redcar(?) run by a chap called Cecil Ayrton and promptly blew the engine on the run home overtaking a Ford Zodiac! We have some film of the car before he repainted it with 'Valspar Green' he sold it for a profit of £50. He owned over a hundred historic vehicles, many now regarded as highly exotic. He just loved old cars, especially pre-war. We grew up with amazing cars turning up most months! He died in 2011 aged 88 musing over his "next car".
