1928 Bentley 4½ Litre
Vanden Plas Style Tourer Chassis number
PM3263, Engine number PM3264
Bentley domination at Le Mans in the
20s is legendary today and presumably
helped sell those with dreams of high-speed
motoring. The Autocar in the 20s claimed
the 4½ Litre to be two cars in one
according to the driver at the wheel,
an exceptional car at top speed but
remarkably smooth and quiet for town
work. They also praised the power,
speed, and tractability of the big
machine as simply wonderful.
Substantially engineered in every
respect, the 4½ Litre four-cylinder
single overhead cam 4 valve per cylinder
engine drives through a single plate
clutch to a four-speed gearbox. In
the hands of the daring these cars
were capable of reaching speeds close
to 100 mph.
Delivered new to Mr. N. Norman as
an H. J. Mulliner Saloon in July 1928,
PM3263 received a ground-up restoration
in the 90s at which time a high quality
Vanden Plas style tourer body by James
E. Pearce was fitted. An ultimate
touring automobile fitted with an
overdrive, driving lights, turn signals,
two independent electric fuel pumps,
and a vacuum fuel supply system.
A well sorted matching numbers chassis
car finished in dark green with a
green leather interior. Previously
owned by Mat Syzak, president of the
RROC.
PM3263 was a participant in a recent
North America Vintage Bentley Meet,
the Bentley Drivers Club European
Tour, and 2002 Colorado Grand.
