"Registration Number: YT 2204
Chassis Number: BL 1623 Engine Number:
BA 2596
This is a Bentley for every day use
or a blast around the track. So great
fun on the road and easy to drive.
She was known in house as THE OTHER
GUN. At this time we were, and still
are, racing "Mother Gun".
All the work was done at Stanley Mann
Racing and all supervised by one of
the best vintage Bentley racing engineers;
Stuart Fearnside. "one of the
top men in the vintage Bentley world".
History
In 2004 I went to H & H auctions
to buy for a client an original 1927
3 litre Red Label Speed Model Bentley
which was in need of a complete rebuild.
His requirements were for a fast vintage
Bentley for road use with luggage
space and to play with on the track.
This was the basis of the 3/8 Brooklands
type Bentley we have here.
Rebuilt and two years later she was
winning races and getting placed at
Silverstone, Oulton Park, Donnington,
etc.
I could say she goes really well,
oh dear, but better than that; she
goes like the preverbal sh*t off the
shovel and all from a Bentley which
is just as happy going down the country
lanes of Hertfordshire as on a race
track.
For those technical minded here goes:
Original 1929 Speed Six engine uprated
to 8 ltrs.
330 bhp and over 550lb ft of torque
- in non tech terms: it feels like
your head wants to leave your shoulders
or "how to experience G force
at zero feet".
Uprated Bentley brakes - yes, it can
stop as well as it goes.
Weight of this Bentley is 1260 kg.
So please make your way to The Fruit
Farm and start to haggle.
Price POA."
This car is for sale as of June
28, 2011. |

Bentley 3/8 Litre
Special 1927
The donor car for this magnificent
and very potent Bentley 3/8 Litre
Special was a 1927 Bentley 3 Litre
'Red Label' - chassis number BL1623
-- that had been off the road since
1965. Originally a Carbodies saloon
sold new to R.F.B. Mackay Esq of Glentruitton,
Oban by Henlys Ltd of Great Portland
St, London, the 'Red Label' is known
to have been rebodied as a tourer
sometime before 1949.
Decidedly tired after decades of dry
storage, it entered the current ownership
during April 2003. Working with renowned
W.O. Bentley specialist Stanley Mann
at the time but now the co-proprietor
of FS Racing, Stuart Fearnside was
given the responsibility of transforming
chassis BL1623 into a truly competitive
3/8 Litre Special. Suitably refurbished,
the original 9ft 9¢ in wheelbase
chassis was retained as were the front
and rear axles. The rest of the car's
highly evolved specification is outlined
below:
Engine: Original cylinder block and
three-throw mechanism, Speed Six-type
crankcase with straight rear engine
arms / mounts, Phoenix crankshaft,
Phoenix rockers, Carrillo con-rods,
high-lift camshaft, Bill Miller pistons,
AP Racing clutch.
Approximate outputs are: 300bhp and
550lbft.
Gearbox: D-type four-speeder with
original lid allied to a new BDC casing.
Assembled by the late John Hunt.
Back Axle: Currently fitted with a
lightweight magnesium nosepiece and
3.3:1 final drive ratio giving a circa
120mph top speed. Though, installing
a 3.0:1 final drive ratio apparently
gives circa 150mph on longer circuits.
Brakes: Hydraulically operated four-wheel
drums with upgraded linings, shoes
and ventilation etc Steering: Steering
box utilises a normal 3 Litre ratio
but feeds to an altered drop arm so
that response to the helm is quicker
than a 4¢ Litre car but slower
than a 3 Litre one (a design which
was originally conceived with beaded-edge
tyres in mind)
Bodywork: Polished aluminium fabricated
by Peter Claridge - to great effect
- in the style of a Brooklands Outer
Circuit Racer.
Ignition: Twin Aircraft specification
Scintilla magnetos Still registered
as 'YT 2204' - the same number plate
with which it began life - and capable
of road or race use, the Bentley was
recently circuit tested by respected
motoring journalist and talented driver
Tony Dron as part of a feature article
for Octane magazine (August 2009 issue).
Runner-up in the 1977 British Saloon
Car Championship and a Le Mans 24-hours
veteran, Mr Dron's contemporary and
historic racing career has seen him
pilot everything from a Ford Zodiac
to a 1938 Mercedes-Benz W154 Grand
Prix car! His thoughts on the reconfigured
chassis BL1623 are "I JUST LOVE
THIS CAR. It's outrageous, it's fabulous
and it could be called the daughter
of all amazing mechanical monsters."
Joe Singer of FS Racing ('FS' stands
for Fearnside and Singer) brought
it along and it was a major highlight
to be allowed to drive it. This recent
creation from FS Racing is a 1927
3 Litre chassis fitted with an 8 Litre
Bentley engine from about 1930. The
superb body, built in lightweight
aluminium by Peter Claridge, complements
a well-conceived project perfectly.
The aim was to create a special along
the lines of the fabulous Brooklands
Outer Circuit record cars of the 1930s.
It's obvious that practical performance
on a modern circuit was also aimed
at. They could not have done a better
job. Joe is a tall man and the narrow
cockpit therefore felt as if it had
been made for me. That helps, as does
the fact that this machine is built
for real speed and thoroughly well
sorted out. Despite the massive engine,
which Joe says gives 'well over 300bhp
and at least 550lbs ft of torque',
the entire car weighs only 1260kg.
It's geared for just over 130mph at
Silverstone and it gets there really
fast, with wonderful deep growling
noises from its irrepressible engine.
You sit in it, behind that Brooklands
screen, with your legs out almost
straight. Then you reach outside to
select first gear in the old Bentley
'D' box, and you're away up the pit
lane. Howling down the Hanger Straight
at full speed towards Stowe Corner,
it feels much faster than 130mph.
You brake, carefully, because the
hydraulic system has a tendency to
snatch the odd wheel, and you turn
in. There's no need to change down
for Stowe. It's a fast bend and it's
on in top. Then, with under 3000rpm
on the tacho, you start to apply the
throttle. Mighty forces stir in the
beast immediately and you sense the
power oversteer as the torque starts
to overcome the grip of the tyres-
and away you go. Addictive and magnificent,
it's a million miles from modern motor
racing'Need we say more?

YT2204 Bentley
3/8 Special
Originally a 3 Litre touring car,
it was bought at auction as a barn
find and then converted to the form
that you see now by Stuart Fearnside
while at Stanley Mann's Fruit Farm.
The car receives a lot of attention
due to its striking styling, aluminium
finish and aggressive exhaust note.
While only in its second season of
racing the car has finished top 4
in a number of trophy races and shown
that it is still yet to reach its
full potential; a task that we look
forward to. (the
