Chassis No. 110
Engine No. 104
Registration No. KLY 3

(Updated with information from Lionel Burrell. - September 2015)

"Chassis number 110 originally bore the reg no XL 5604.

This car was apparently crashed in 1948 and the major components transplanted into a new chassis and re-registered KLY 3. This car now belongs to Lionel Burrell who claims it to have the chassis number 110. This suggests the parts were not transferred but the car repaired. If this is the case why was it necessary to re-register the vehicle? The current owner of SV 4513, although admitting that his car is constructed from period spares, claims it to have chassis 110 which was apparently repaired after the accident.

Does anyone have any relevant information?"

Michael Hay, in his book Bentley: The Vintage Years, 1997, states: "Reg KLY 3. Stripped for racing - 15/50 back axle, Claudel-Hobson carb. Raced at Brooklands by C. W. Fiennes, car known as "Wilfred". Twin SUs and 4 wheel brakes fitted 1924. Rebuilt 1946 as Vanden Plas tourer. BUT see R188 114-9 - some confusion over chassis frame (see ch. 1026)." - VintageBentleys.org, Jan 12, 2016

In September 2015, AutoCherish.com put up a vintage Bentley car for sale stating the Chassis no. to be 110 and Reg no. SV 4513. We posted the details on this page, only to receive a prompt rebuttal from Lionel Burrell on Sep 29 (who is owner of 110 as shown below), saying, "The recent addition is not my car, please could you remove it from my listing. It is a reproduction of my car. I bought my car in the 1960, from the last owner who had the car from 1947 till I bought it. I have never put my car up for SALE."

The car photos and other details were replaced on the AutoCherish website with a notice stating, "No longer available - Sold or withdrawn from sale". The AutoCherish car photo and other details have since been moved to our Bentley Specials section. - VintageBentleys.org

"Dear Robert, Found more pictures of my Bentley from the 1960s and 1970s. I took my car to interview WO when I was art editor with AutoCar magazine.

We spent the day with WO, talking about railway trains, cars and aeroplanes. The car was not road taxed so I drove to his home on trade plates. The feature did appear in AutoCar, featuring my car on the cover.

The other pictures were taken when Chisborn Restorations did a body-off chassis work and re-paint."

"Contrary to popular opinion, LB is not about to climb into mid-air, but positioning a ladder for our man Skilleter to take photographs."

("LB" stands for Lionel Burrell, associate editor, "Thoroughbred & Classic Cars" magazine, and Skilleter is presumably the photographer.)

1969

Late in the 1960s I was Art Editor on Autocar. As I had a 3 litre Bentley, Sammy Davis, a renowned works driver and sports editor in the 20 and 30s, asked if I would take my 3 litre over to Le Mans for the 50th anniversary of the 24-Hour race. I jumped at the chance. We, that is Sammy and I, were to drive round the circuit just before the start of the race. Here is the story of my drive to Le Mans and the fantastic / memorabe weekend.

Hope your readers / viewers enjoy it.
Rind regards,

Lionel Burrell,
KLY 3

P.S. I bought the Bentley from a Dr Watkins in 1963. Tony Townsend, a Bentley specialist, subsequently carried out restoration and repairs.
