"I have owned
the Bentley 3 litre Speed model, UM
2061, for just over 4 years. I bought
the car from a friend, Tom Barnes,
who lives in our village. He had had
the car since 1965 and it was he who
had carried out the major refurbishment
of the car in the late 1960s. The
car's home has only moved a mile in
over forty years. Tom won several
concourse events with the car shortly
after the rebuild, including the Sunday
Telegraph Concours d'Elegance in 1974.
Tom undertook many trips with the
car throughout England, Scotland and
to France. He took it to Le Mans and
drove around the 24 Hour race circuit
with other Bentleys in the 1970s.
Since I purchased the car my wife,
Ray, and I have been on four trips
to France, twice to Scotland for the
BDC Scottish Whit events, to Devon
for a BDC International and on numerous
trips throughout England and Wales.
The car is fitted with twin Slopers,
ML CG4 magnetos, Univac and cone clutch,
has the same Vanden Plas body style
as original with the same colour paint
scheme but Tom fitted it with a "B"
gearbox and 4 star differential. I
have had some engine work done with
a new balanced crankshaft with shells,
rods, pistons, rockers, oil pump,
water pump and alternator. In addition
I have fitted an overdrive unit which
helps limit the revs at higher speeds.
The original dynamo remains in place."

Michael Hay, in his book Bentley:
The Vintage Years, 1997, states:
"Vanden Plas body no. 1173. Some
confusion over engine - given as 1185
in Service Records but 1185 listed to
ch. 1178 (and in Middleton's book as
well)." |
