DETAILS FROM OWNER
W O Bentley registration PD4405 (original to car)
1925 3/4.5 ltr. Speed model. Chassis no. 839. Engine no. LM1330.
This is a later model big sump engine with the same configuration as the 4.5 litrs. And now fully uprated to 4.5 litrs.
This Bentley has been used and uprated over many decades in a quest for performance. Originally a four seat tourer by Vanden Plas, it was at some time fitted with a Corsica body which I had removed and a faithful reproduction of a short chassis 4.5 ltr. was made by Graham Moss with proper sprung front and rear seat bases, screen, body panels etc. An original bulkhead, bonnet sills etc. fitted and headlamp pillars to take 4.5 ltr. radiator (bonnet no. MR3394. The Bentley was trimmed by Alan Geater.
I purchased the car through the trade. It had just received a complete engine rebuild for the previous owner and apparently had competed two or three thousand miles since. This work was undertaken by Bentley specialist John Ambler including counterbalanced crankshaft, camshaft, rods, pistons, gears, rockers, valves and guides etc. I decided it should also have a modified ceramic seal type water pump from the BDC spares scheme.
The chassis was stripped to the bare metal for the comprehensive restoration by Clive Oliver. Copies of all invoices and CD of restoration are available. New MWS wheels and tyres, tank, shock absorbers, exhaust, wiring, electric fuel pump, battery etc. fitted.
Specification of PD 4405
‘A’ type gearbox no. 263. Borg and Beck type clutch (a fast gear change). The front axle is an original 4.5 ltr. axle no. XR3349 with self wrapping brakes. Back axle banjo casing is 3 ltr. no.354 and the differential nose piece is an original 4.5 ltr. no.NX3466. This was fully restored with new crown wheel and pinion ratio 3.33:1. New BDC 8 ltr. half shafts were fitted. Steering box no. 832 has been modified with 4.5 ltr. ratios.
The car is quick, sporty, comfortable, and very desirable. Records show that it has never been lost sight of and a list of owners is available.
