Both cars (VA4077 and VA4078) were owned by Reg Hunt of Melbourne Australia and I believe there was a clerical error in the catalogue at the time of sale. Reg told me at the time that he purchased VA4078 because it had the chassis number following that of his 4/8 special."

Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic Auction

1931 Bentley 4 litre H.J Mulliner Saloon
$150,000 - $180,000
Engine: In-line six-cylinder, 3915cc
Gearbox: 4-Speed Manual
Body work: Saloon
Colour: Red/Black
Interior: Brown
Trim: Leather
Wheels: Wire spoked
Brakes: Drums

When introduced the Bentley 4-litre was something of a break with tradition for the company in having an F-head (overhead inlet and side exhaust valves) in-line six-cylinder engine with a cast-iron block and detachable head. There was a four-speed manual gearbox with single dry-plate clutch, four-wheel drum braking and the retained semi-elliptic suspension design. Built on two chassis lengths (134 or 140-inch), most 4-litre chassis were clothed in saloon coachwork by the likes of H.J. Mulliner, Thrupp & Maberly, Freestone & Webb, and Gurney Nutting. The Bentley 4-litre was one of the rarest of all W.O. Bentleys, with a mere 50 being made -- it is believed that around 35 survive today.
