1931 Bentley 4 Litre 2-door Sedan
Body by Mulliner;
Chassis No. VF4018;
Engine No. VF4009;

Colour - Black, Black leather roof/Brown leather, Estimate $236,469 - $262,743; Cosmetic restoration, 3+condition; Hammered Sold at $ 170,783 plus commission of 14.62%; Final price $195,744 -- RHD. Sliding sunroof dual sidemounts, opening windshield, bud vases, fog lights, four helmet-style taillights, trafficators, pullup rear window roller shade. Rough old repaint over chipped old paint. Sound old interior and leather roof covering. Aged chrome. Some delaminating glass. Chassis looks like it has never been touched and is the essence of patina. A neat old car which is represented as having had a restoration in the early 90's with 12,000 subsequent miles. September 2006 winner of an "authenticity" prize at the Palais het Loo concours. Original engine, chassis and body built to the specification of the first owner, Phillip Carr. Despite its aged and used condition, this is a very nice example of the rarest of all Bentleys, particularly important because it has all of its original bits and pieces, including the very handsome and sporting 2-door sedan fabric paneled coachwork. An outstanding Bentley, bought for a very reasonable price.

This previously 'unidentified' vintage Bentley has been identified as Chassis No. VF4018 by Olle Ljungström.

"From similarity in look (see photos above and in Michael Hay's Bentley: The Vintage Years), this is Chassis No. VF4018. No 4-litre originally had registration no. SV 6626 so this car has been re-registrated making attribution certain, especially as this would certainly have been a one-off."

"6 Cylinder 120 bhp Engine

The 4 litre was the last model produced by W.O. Bentley's old company, and consisted of a new overhead inlet/side exhaust valve engine designed by Ricardo fitted to basically a shortened 8 litre rolling chassis.

This fixed-head coupe is the work of H.J. Mulliner.
Chassis# VF4018 was registered as GT 27 for Philip Carr.
Owned for many years by Major Gregson, the last owner in England was J. Kamper esq."

This photograph is from an advertisement by Frank Dale & Stepsons in "Thoroughbred & Classic Cars" magazine, March 1980.

Text in advt reads: 4-litre short-chassis Bentley with semi-Weymann patent bodywork by H.J. Mulliner. Largely original in black and tan hide, and until recently in regular daily use and maintained for long-distance touring. Often unjustifiably criticised in past years, the 4-litre model is a sweet and smooth machine of more than capable performance when lightly bodied, as is this example.
