Some photos from the recondition of the engine LR2788 in chassis LR2782 received from car owner Lawrence Southward.

July 13, 2014

"Engine pulled down the all the bits. Found that the wear after 90,000 miles to be minimal still using the old style oil filter as well. All the gears were okay in the gearbox. A few teeth missing on the flywheel ring gear though so that is being replaced. Getting new valves and springs.

Camshaft was okay and the crank is having light polish and cylinders are having a hone but but is still as per it left Brian Morgans workshop all those years ago with no major grinding required. Hasn't been any surprises, apart from how little is required to be done to the engine and gearbox after this long.

A bit of lime scale in the water jacket area that has been cleaned out but on the whole, there was no need to do any major work on the car. The crank had a light polish, the cam is fine and the bores were still pretty good given 50 years since it left Brian Morgan's workshop and approx. 90,000 miles since then.(approx. as the speedo didn't work for a few years!!)

The engine has been cleaned and has been painted the same black colour that Brian Morgan did as it did look smart.

Car now has seen most of the running gear seen to (bearings and brakes etc...) and the body has been left as there was nothing to do there. It will be back on the road by the end of the year and will be ready for another 50 years of 'Vintage Bentleying'."

"Engine out for a freshen up and check. Nothing wrong with it, just had the rest of the car checked and since the engine hadn't been looked at since Brian Morgan restored it, we thought we might as well."

"Car now in Australia, still with same family that has owned it for the last 30 years. Was loaned to the car museum as we had run out of space at home. Currently undergoing some full running gear maintenance except engine as that is still running perfectly. Car pretty much exactly the same as when it left the pages of Brian Morgans book detailing its restoration. Has 4½ chassis ST3002 reg YT1345 as a stable mate in Australia."

'Unknown' vintage Bentley has been identified as Chassis no. LR2782 by Olle Ljungström.

"The famous Speed Six that was restored by Brian Morgan 1959-63, the restoration being described in a series of articles in the "BDC Review" beteween september 1959 and July 1963, later published as a booklet by the Club and still available from the Club Shop. Obviously photographed simultaneously as YX5102, photos published on the site on the same day - 16/5 2013. Sad to see cars like these stored in a museum." — Olle Ljungström, May 22, 2013
