I wish to express my thanks to Eoin Young (1981), Peter Richley (1984), George Klepp (2002) and other literature collectors who have contributed to this literature index. My Bentley collection began in the 1950s. I am still collecting and would appreciate the opportunity to purchase all vintage Bentley literature - brochures, books, programs, handbooks, etc., so that I can add to or upgrade my collection. - Robert McLellan

This was the first Bentley catalog produced and was the work of Frank Corbett for the Nov. 1919 Olympia Motor Show, as stated on page 37 of Those Bentley Days by A. E. C. Hillslead (1953):

"The only space we had been able to procure at Olympia was a side alley immediately below the gallery. As this, however, was opposite the D. F. P. stand, it meant that we should be able to divide our attention between the two. In the meantime H.M. and I had prepared the subject matter for the first Bentley catalogue. The general set-up was the work of Frank Corbett, who was ultimately responsible for all the Bentley literature, and he was certainly an artist at the game. That particular catalogue was in keeping with the character of the car, and typified excellence and high quality on every page ... We were pleased, and so was W.O. But soon after the show opened we discovered that catalogue possessed two great drawbacks. The small boy fraternity quickly found out that a fine coloured plate of a Bentley could be had for nothing, with the result that every copy which was lying about promptly vanished. That brought about severe rationing in order to reserve supplies for those people who were seriously interested in the car. "The other drawback related to the pencil drawings. A rumour was put in circulation by those competitors who did not wish us well (and there were quite a few), that the 3-litre Bentley had progressed no farther than the drawing board and the engine in the polished chassis was made of wood; hence the absence of photographs. It was unkind and untrue, but a practice all too common in the various fields of manufacture."
