To remove the starter cotter
bolt, remove split pin, and nut, washer
etc, check under the engine mounting that
the bottom of the pin is a round pin and
not a bolt. Replace the nut loosely, to
protect the thread.
Then using a brass or aluminium drift held
on the the top of the nut, hit the drift
hard, to drive the cotter pin / bolt downwards.
This pin is round, with a taper flat machined
on one side, to impinge on the side of the
starter motor and keep it in place.
