'Eastings' Rear Screen
Q&A :: 0014

QUESTION  On the original VDP build sheet for my 1924 speed model 4 seat sports Chassis no. 563, Reg no. XY 4001 it says: "Supply and fit Eastings rear screen with bag £6 .2. 6d." Does any one know anything about 'Eastings'?

  ANSWER (2)

Our car YL 30 a 1925 speed model with original VDP body had been built with an Auster screen at a then cost of £15. I have over last winter reinstated the screen and would recommend this to anyone who takes children or passengers: open cars are only practical as a 2 seater for long journeys when not so equipped. Our children were getting to the point when they would no longer fit under the tonneau cover , with the screen they can read a book at 80 mph(sorry 70 mph) on the motoreway. Please find a scanned image of the Easting screen from "Motor Bodywork" 1924 and a picture of YL 30 with screen.

  ANSWER (1)

There were many types of rear screens for tourers in the 1920s. Auster was the best known, but Easting was one of many others. They all look similar to me, but that did not prevent each of them from claiming vast superiority over the others. Like Auster, Easting screens had three panels, adjustable on the sides. Cost was L8.10.0 for "medium" cars in 1924 — did VdP sell at a loss? From Easting Windscreens Ltd., 132 Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, with a London sales office at 24 Finsbury Square.
