  ANSWER (2)

The cloth used was a lacquer coated cotton duck with various grains pressed into it. Rexene was one of the brands. It is somewhat like doping airplane wings. The patent included special metal brackets used at all the joints of the wood frame. These allowed some movement but separated the wood pieces with an air space so there was no squeaking. The bodies were light, quiet and somewhat insulated with the padding and air spaces built in. Their popularity ended about 1930. The photo in the ad appears to be a Gurney Nutting design (see chassis FA2507 which had a landau bar added later.)

  ANSWER (1)

Weymann held a patent on this design of fabric body. Many coachbuilders took licences, so Weymann is used as the generic name for all bodies that used this patent. The problems with metal bodies were cracking due to chassis flexing and noise, especially on closed bodies. The Weymann design (and other similar designs) eliminated these problems. Once chassis and metal body design improved, people moved to metal bodies, which had a longer life.
