QUESTION I am restoring Chassis No. 587 and need to know what the front wing / mudguard / fender shape were when the car was new. Does anyone have any photographs they could send me?

Body is open tourer.

  ANSWER (2)

There are two ways of looking for the answer:

(1) Though the body on your car carried Romilly body plates, Romilly was a dealer. In the 1920s coachbuilders often complained that dealers removed the coachbuilder's plate and substituted their own. Body details on your car, including hardware and so forth, are identical to Gurney Nutting 'standard' 4-door tourer bodies.

(2) The 'standard' tourer was also made by other coachbuilders, and Vanden Plas, for one, obtained drawings from Bentley Motors. So, Romilly could have done the same, and since they did apparently make bus and truck bodies, had the capability for reproducing a body from the Bentley drawings.

Both possibilities suggest looking at Gurney Nutting tourers, or indeed the catalog illustration in Catalog 10 (see the Galleries section). Most Gurney Nutting tourers used this 'speed' wing, as shown in the catalog (see also the pics of chassis 930, which has not been messed with). Wings on your car have a bit more curvature, which is I suppose why you asked the question. But I don't have any photos that would establish whether they were the straight, 'speed' wings originally.

Good luck.

  ANSWER (1)

Hi Scott. Suggest you contact Bruce Campbell in Northern California who has a 1928 4.5 litre. Also should contact Charles Vyze. He has a Thrupp & Maberly and can share pictures of wings you might need for restoration. His is a 1929 Rolls-Royce 20/25.
